WP are working with RSH-P to deliver a dramatic new underground station that will transform Naples existing airport terminal into a sustainable transport hub linked to the Napoli Centrale railway station in Piazza Garibaldi and the ferry terminal at Piazza Municipio.
A large canopy, made up of a series of long laminated timber ribs and linked by aluminium louvres to shade passengers, fans out over a new pedestrian piazza. The structural ribs then extend into the station beneath, drawing passengers downwards on criss-crossing escalators. The elliptical ‘well’ that descends to the underground trains is a central focus of the station’s design. The form of the roof allows natural light to penetrate deep into the internal space of the station.
